MARESA Literacy Monthly - September Edition

Maresa Monthly September issue

Meet the Team

We're here to serve you!

Chandra Ziegler

Hi, I'm the new kid on the block and I feel so unbelievably blessed that I get to work with Kristen and Gaby...they are phenomenal. My name is pronounced like Sandra but with a ch...but I respond to pretty much anything. I've been a teacher for 16 years and have worked primarily with kindergarten and second grade but I have also taught Title 1 reading, Early 5s, 6-8 Language Arts, and a year of high school alternative education. I am passionate about all things literacy.

My family and I just moved to Marquette this summer (okay more like a week ago) after living in Crystal Falls for 15 years. We love it here and look forward to all the opportunities this area has to offer. My husband and I have three daughters...Emma is in 6th grade, Hali is in 2nd, and Kate is in JK! We also have two black labs...Keneu (it's the name of a lake in the Boundary Waters and is pronounced canoe) and Fischer (like the ski brand)!

Kristen Peterson

It is hard to believe I am starting my 11th year at MARESA! Where does the time go?  I help support literacy, school improvement (MICIP), new teachers, MTSS, and elementary principals. I have my hands in a little bit of everything at MARESA!

Experiencing my children, Josiah and Isla, grow as readers and writers has been my greatest joy and teacher of how literacy impacts lives. My son, Josiah, at age eight, once said, “ "I think reading is going to be my life.”

Supporting teachers, coaches, and administrators in their literacy journeys so all children have access to literacy instruction and experiences that bring joy is how I honor my son’s short and beautiful life and what gives my life meaning after his loss.

My daughter, Isla, and I love to craft, look for heart rocks on Lake Superior, and keep our Little Blue Heart Library at 121 E. Michigan St., Marquette, MI stocked with children’s books, homemade bookmarks, and stuffies (all things Josiah and Isla loved together).  We would love for you to visit our Little Blue Heart Library and find a book that brings joy to you and the children in your life!

Gaby Eyzaguirre

Hello again, I'm Gaby Eyzaguirre and I am the Technology Integration Specialist at MARESA as well as our RITS (REMC Instructional Technology Specialist) representative. I joined MARESA in 2013

My job is to support teachers, staff, and students in their use of technology for learning, this includes all areas of instruction that can be improved or supported with technology like assessment, content resources, data collection/interpretation, behavior tracking, communication, collaboration, organization, presentation, multimedia creation, device use, etc.  My favorites are (as some of you know) LEGO robotics and storytelling, and STEAM.

I am originally from Lima-Perú. My husband Hugo is a professor at NMU... (this usually answers the question, how did you end up in Marquette?) I have two grown children that live away in Wisconsin and Iowa, although my children were born in the US they were raised in Perú for the most part. They are both wonderful human beings that bring joy to my life.

Theme of the Year

research-based writing across the curriculum!

This year the focus of our time together will be on Literacy Essential #6: Research and Standards-Aligned Writing Instruction. We will dive into the top 10 evidence-based practices for teaching writing. Through discussion, collaboration, and reflection you will walk back into your classrooms feeling prepared and perhaps even inspired to teach writing!

MARESA Literacy NetworkS

Back to In-Person!

After two years of trying to stay connected via Zoom, we are back to in-person MARESA K-5 Teacher Literacy Networks! The MARESA Literacy Teacher Network sessions allow every K-5 teacher the opportunity to connect, network, and grow in the Literacy Essentials with their MARESA grade-level colleagues.

If you are a new teacher or if you haven't participated in the MARESA Literacy Teacher Networks in the past, please consider joining your grade level's network to:

  • Connect & collaborate with your grade-level colleagues from across MARESA
  • Share best practices, successes, and challenges
  • Engage in sustained professional learning around literacy
  • Reflect, Evaluate, Grow
  • Improve the literacy lives of all students
For registration, dates, & time, see the event flyer.

Engaging Families

Student Success Calendar!

To support literacy in the home, St. Clair RESA's Student Success Calendar is an amazing resource for families and teachers. September's strategy is called R.E.A.D...click on the link above to learn more. We hope you enjoy the September activity calendar. It's full of great ideas to enhance literacy.

What's Happening in MARESA

Spotlight on Instructional Coaching!

The six new instructional coaches from MAPS and North Star gathered at MARESA for a week of "Launching Into Coaching." The learning was deep and the energy and passion were evident. They are eager to begin their work and excited to collaborate with teachers. Click here to see the flyer they created that explains what Instructional Coaching is all about!

Spotlight on Book Vending Machines!

For the Love of Reading

Books Unite Us!

This year, Banned Books Week is September 18-24. It is an annual event with the goal of raising awareness of current and historical attempts to censor books in schools and libraries. It brings the community together to support the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those containing uncomfortable truths.

Look here for a list of important resources for educators (and students). It includes things like the First Amendment in Schools, a powerful position statement on classroom libraries from the NCTE, a handbook for how to respond to book challenges (I personally could've used this one...you'll have to ask me later), and much more.

"The ALA condemns censorship and works to ensure free access to information. For more information on ALA's efforts to raise awareness of censorship and promote the freedom to read, please explore Banned Books Week."

Go! Go! Gaby!
