Frequent Student Response Techniques
Literacy Essential #3 reminds us that children should use most of their time actually reading and writing (or working toward this goal in kindergarten and early first grade) during small group instruction.
Using Anita Archer’s Active Participation Strategies is one way to increase your students’ reading and writing. Below are some video examples that model best practices for increasing student engagement in small group instruction.
High Quality Literacy Games
*Honoring the Elements of Explicit Instruction shared in Session #2
What are the Other Kids Doing?
*When you are teaching a small group or individual students.
Reading
Literacy Essential #1 acknowledges that time for self-selected reading fosters literacy motivation and engagement within and across lessons.
See how this teacher uses student-generated book trailers to motivate and engage readers in the classroom library!
See how this teacher uses a basket and sticky notes to engage students in independent book talks that engage fellow classmates!
Writing
Literacy Essential #1 acknowledges that daily opportunities to make choices in writing fosters literacy motivation and engagement within and across lessons. This, combined with a call to have students write outside of what is assigned, opens up tremendous potential. Consider:
How could students share their interests through writing?
What collaborative writing could happen during this time?
Collaboration
Literacy Essential #1 acknowledges that collaboration with others fosters literacy motivation and engagement within and across lessons. See how these teachers allow opportunities for collaboration within their classrooms. Consider:
How could modeling and explicit instruction in collaborative reading and writing set the stage for students to do these activities independently while you meet with small groups or individuals?
Discovery Education Strategies when using multimedia resources (photos, videos, sound).
When we use digital media (photos, videos, podcasts) we need to use different teaching strategies than when we use physical images like the ones in books. Discovery Education has a great amount of experience making use of multimedia resources. DE has published SOS Spotlight On Strategies (includes samples). These are great strategies to use with your students while engaging with multimedia resources. Some of your schools have access to Discovery Education (login w/google) but even if you don’t you can read the articles on their blog.
